This methodology was created by Project Management Institute in the United States. It emerged as a result of realization of common practices in managing projects in branches as versatile as construction and pharmaceutical. Common practices turned into Standards being the base for a distinct profession to be denoted. In 1981 PMI board accepted a project aiming to create procedures and concepts necessary to support the Project Manager profession through:
- indication of the professional’s characteristics (ethics)
- contents and structure of the professional knowledge (standards)
- professional achievements recognition (accreditation)
In 1996 A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) was published.
